Angioplasty & Coronary Interventions

Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold (BVS)

A dissolvable stent that supports the artery while it heals and is then gradually absorbed by the body, leaving no permanent metal behind.
Bioresorbable scaffold supporting the wall of a coronary artery

Overview

A bioresorbable scaffold works like a stent to hold the artery open after angioplasty, but it is made of a material that the body slowly absorbs over a few years.

Once dissolved, the artery can regain its natural movement. Scaffolds are suitable only for carefully selected blockages, and Dr. Senthilnathan will advise whether one is appropriate for you.

Who may need it

  • Selected younger patients with suitable, non-calcified blockages

What to expect

  1. The artery is carefully prepared and sized using intracoronary imaging.
  2. The scaffold is deployed on a balloon like a regular stent.

Recovery & aftercare

  • Recovery is similar to standard angioplasty. Antiplatelet medicines must be taken as prescribed.
