Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL)

Sound-wave 'shockwave' balloon therapy that cracks calcium in the artery wall — the same principle used to break kidney stones.
Intravascular lithotripsy balloon delivering sound waves to calcium in an artery

Overview

Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) uses a special balloon that emits sonic pressure waves. These waves crack the calcium deep inside the artery wall while leaving soft tissue unharmed.

Once the calcium is fractured, the artery expands easily and the stent opens fully. IVL is gentle, simple to use and has a very good safety profile for calcified arteries.

Who may need it

  • Calcified blockages in the heart or leg arteries
  • Under-expanded stents caused by calcium

What to expect

  1. The IVL balloon is placed across the calcified area and inflated at low pressure.
  2. Short bursts of sound waves are delivered; you may feel a mild tapping sensation or nothing at all.
  3. The artery is then stented as usual.

Recovery & aftercare

  • Recovery is the same as for standard angioplasty.
